The Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus has always delivered cutting-edge hardware at laughably low prices. They don’t disappoint with their newest flagship: the OnePlus 6T. The smartphone is sleek, incredibly powerful, and economically priced. It offers many of the features you’d find in smartphones twice as expensive.
Does this phone have what it takes to be your daily driver, though? Is it worth your hard-earned money? Let’s find out:
What’s new with the OnePlus 6T?
You may be familiar with OnePlus’ previous releases. If so, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the upgrades packed into the newest flagship:
– The OnePlus 6T has an in-display fingerprint sensor. It’s fast, accurate, and makes unlocking your phone a breeze.
– The phone ships with Android 9.0 out-of-the-box.
– The camera comes with a “Night” photography feature.
Design: Top-notch
The OnePlus 6T is, simply put, beautiful. The phone has a glossy aluminum body with a glass back, which makes it look sleek and modern. The phone is tall, with a 6.4-inch display screen. It’s available in two color schemes: Mirror Black and Midnight Black. The Silk White color option they had with the OnePlus 6 is absent.
The OnePlus 6T bears a striking resemblance to phones in the Oppo lineup, namely the Oppo R17 and the R17 Pro. That’s to be expected. Oppo is the parent company behind OnePlus. They share the same design philosophies and OnePlus phones often mimic previously released Oppo versions.
The OnePlus 6T is very light at 185 grams. It has a solid build though and should stand up to daily use. The glass back and the aluminum frame make the phone look glossy. Also, the frame feels nice to touch. The power button, the mode change button, and the volume button are responsive and easy-to-reach. Using the phone is an enjoyable experience.
Display: Almost uniformly edge-to-edge
The OnePlus 6T has an expansive 6.41 inch AMOLED screen, with a Full HD resolution of 2340 x 1080p and a PPI count of 402. You’d be hard pressed to find a better display on the market, even if you look at more-expensive flagships like the iPhone X and the Pixel 3. The color accuracy is excellent. It’s also usable in direct sunlight.
The screen itself is almost edge-to-edge. There’s a teardrop notch at the top for the selfie camera. Thankfully, the notch is small and doesn’t detract from the screen. As is the norm, the display is protected by a thick Gorilla Glass screen. Overall, there’s very little to complain about in the display department.
Camera: Amazing
OnePlus phones have always had good cameras. The 16MP + 20MP camera on the OnePlus 6 is really excellent. The camera offers good color accuracy and contrast. The AI-assisted software makes clicking stable, in-focus photos easy. Photos clicked in the daylight look phenomenal. You’re getting a bang for your buck with the OnePlus 6T.
The OnePlus 6T has a new Night mode, designed to let you click great photos in low-light conditions. The mode works as intended – most of the times. The mode offers good color saturation and detail, with solid noise reduction. The feature is handy. You should be able to use the camera for some nice night-shots.
Performance: Scorchingly fast
OnePlus phones have always been extremely fast. The OnePlus 6T is no exception. The phone packs a powerful Octa-Core Snapdragon 845 processor, with four Kryo 385 performance cores running at 2.8GHz and four Efficiency Kryo cores running at 1.8GHz each. The phone has a whopping 8GB of RAM and the latest Adreno 630 GPU.
Going by Antutu Benchmarks, the OnePlus 6T – with a score of 297,146 is the fastest Android flagship in the market. It leaves higher-priced flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S9+ in the dust. In non-technical terms, the OnePlus 6T will run the latest games and apps with little trouble. Apps will launch very quickly and you can switch between several at once. Only the iPhone Xs Max does better. If you’re a heavy user or gamer, you’re getting more than your money’s worth.
Software: Android 9.0 out-of-the-box
The OnePlus 6T ships with Android 9.0 out-of-the-box. That means you get access to cool, useful Android Pie features like Adaptive Battery, Dark Mode, and App Actions without having to wait for an update. Android Pie also comes with useful gesture navigation. Browsing the OnePlus 6T is intuitive, seamless, and fun.
Note that OnePlus, like other major Android phone makers, offers its own version of Android Pie. In OnePlus’ case, it’s OxygenOS. OxygenOS is perhaps the best-rated Android version on the planet. It includes as many as 500 performance tweaks or upgrades over the stock version. The user experience is phenomenal, as OnePlus’ dedicated community can attest.
Battery Life: Good, even after extensive use
Unless you’re a heavy user, you’ll be able to use the OnePlus 6T for an entire day on a single charge. The OnePlus 6T has a big 3,700 mAh battery, which can provide more than enough juice for continuous web-surfing, messaging, voice calls, and other daily activities.
What about if you’re a heavy user who watches movies or plays games often? Thanks to OnePlus’ Dash Charge, you don’t have to worry. You can charge up a drained OnePlus 6T phone from 0 to 60 in 30 minutes! You can use the phone to your heart’s content and quickly charge it up if it gets drained.
The Bottom Line
The OnePlus 6T is a competitive flagship, even when pitted against the likes of Samsung Galaxy S9 or Google Pixel 3. You definitely can’t do better at the asking price. If you’re looking for a stunning phone with a colorful display, great good looks, and outstanding performance, then OnePlus 6T is for you.
